Summer Camp 2010 Announcement PDF Print E-mail

Are your Scouts and Patrol Leaders' Council looking ahead to next summer?  Making campout plans for next spring and summer?  It is not too soon to begin making those important plans.  As your troop's PLC considers and makes those decisions, don't forget about including a long-term summer camp experience at Camp James Ray (new, air-conditioned Dining Hall), Camp Cherokee (air-conditioned Dining Hall), or Camp Constantin (it's a dry summer heat) on the calendar.  Our Circle Ten Council summer camps are always the best places to be, and 2010 promises to be another terrific year of great programs, outstanding staff, and good Scouting fun!  Remember, our camps are close-in locations, and our summer camp programs are great values.  All that is missing right now is you and your Scouts!

Please take a look at the attached "2010 Summer Camp Campsite Request Form," and check out the summer camp information at www.circle10.org Summer camp reservations are made through our Circle Ten Council Office with this campsite request form and fee deposit.  Please contact Circle Ten Camping for more information.  We look forward to welcoming you and your troop to summer camp!

Arrowmen Improving Camps

Mission: To create a group inside the Order of the Arrow Lodge to provide construction manpower and resources to the Circle Ten Council Camps for improving council camps through renovation, conservation, or new construction of capital improvement projects. This should always be completed in a professional manner with the proper materials and experienced supervision of craftsmen or experts in the various trades along with proper planning.

Goals:

1)Conduct Ordeal weekend projects that include meaningful work projects for candidates and members with some permanent renovations or upgrades or repairs of existing facilities with the proper craftsmen and planning.

2)Create a list of craftsmen and crews in the Lodge and Council that are willing to volunteer their time to work on these projects.

3)Once a year, pick a camp and a major project at that camp to complete off the capital improvements and facilities list for that camp.

Calendar:

1) Committee Meetings: Twice a year (winter and summer) conduct a Construction meeting of the Lodge to coordinate the projects with camps to ensure completion of projects and that they do not run over a year to complete. One of those meetings should be with the Camp Committee Chairmen and Rangers to discuss priorities and decide on the next projects to complete.

2) Ordeal Projects: Hold planning meetings a minimum of six weeks before from each Ordeal weekend to ensure a good list of enough projects, adequate number of the right tools in good repair and ready for use, and select crew leaders for each of the work projects and work crews to complete the project.

3) Council Facilities and Camping Committee: Work closely with the Council Camping Committee to ensure the OA is working on their priorities and goals for the camps.

Committee Structure:

1) Primary Committee: Chairmen familiar with construction; at least one but hopefully two Architect/Engineers familiar with proper construction techniques and design, Communications person in charge of communicating with the lodge, creating and maintaining a list of craftsmen in the lodge and council that are willing to work on projects to benefit the Council Camps along with keeping track of the service hours of volunteers for recognition and Service Hour tracking purchases.

2) Secondary Committee: Crew Leaders, Craftsmen, and Workers that are willing to work on camp projects at either Ordeals or other weekends to benefit the council camps.

The E. Urner Goodman Camping Award

The E. Urner Goodman Award was established in 1969 as a tribute and testimonial to the Order's founder, E. Urner Goodman. Its purpose is to encourage and challenge Order of the Arrow members and lodges to increase their effectiveness in promoting and increasing Scout camping in each council. Awards are presented to two outstanding lodges in each region annually. For a lodge to be eligible for consideration, the E. Urner Goodman Camping Award petition should be completed and forwarded with the lodge's charter renewal application.

More information on the award can be found on the National OA Website

Circle Ten High Adventure News PDF Print E-mail

Hello Chapter Leaders,  Here is a high adventure update about the Circle Ten Council contingents to Philmont and Northern Tier.  Doug Latimer, the Circle Ten High Adventure volunteer Scouter, asked us to share this info in our chapters and districts.  Thank you for all you do to deliver an OUTstanding program to your Scouts!  Camping is OUTstanding smiles,  The Camping Promotions Team

Philmont 2010

If you have any youth and/or adults interested in going on a backpacking trek to Philmont this summer please advise me soon.  Several units have openings and could be able to place a small group of 5 of 6 on the same crew if desired.  If your unit has openings for this summer please let me know.

Northern Tier 2011

Sam Cook in his book “Up North” describes the area that surrounds Northern Tier best… "Each of us has an ‘Up North’. It’s a time and place far from here and now. It’s a map on the wall, a dream in the making, a tugging at one’s soul. For those who feel the tug, who make the dream happen, who put the map in the packsack and go, the world is never quite the same again."

The Circle Ten Council Contingents to Northern Tier is a great way for small Troops to offer a “Wilderness Adventure that Last a Lifetime” at a very competitive cost.  The Council Continent creates an excellent opportunity for larger units to offer more than one High Adventure activity a year.  Also there is no limit on the number of Crews.  We have 2 “prime” arrival dates for next summer and if they are not filled by April 16th we will need to release some of them back to Northern Tier.

Each crew to consist of 8 members and Northern Tier requires the number of youth to be in majority.  Each crew will have the choice of staying in the US (Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness) or Canada (Quetico Provincial Park). The cost per crew varies as the fees are higher for camping in Quetico Park.

The following rate includes transportation, NT fees, camping fees for BWCAW or Quetico Park and meals at base camp.  Cost for a crew selecting BWCAW is $7200 ($900 each) and cost for Quetico Park is $8000 ($1000 each).

Fees that are not included are lightweight canoes, maps, fishing license, crew photos and meals while traveling to/from Northern Tier.

Contingent I will depart the Council office on June 30th ~ 5:00 pm and arrive NT 1:00 pm on July 1st.  On July 1st you will prepare for hitting the water on July 2nd.  You will come off the water on July 9th and depart for home July 10th returning to the Council office the morning of July 11th.

Contingent II will depart the Council office on July 9th ~ 12:00 pm by bus and arrive at Northern Tier ~9:00 AM on July 10th.  On July 10th you will prepare for hitting the water on July 11th.  You will come off the water on July 18th and depart for home July 19th returning to the Council office the morning of July 20th.

If your unit would like to reserve 1 or more crews send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it with your first choice of contingents.  Crews will be awarded in order of email request.  Deposit of $400 per crew will be due soon.

Let me know if you need more information or would like someone to meet with your unit for a presentation on Northern Tier.  We need to wrap up the registration process soon, so contact me ASAP to sign up or for questions.

Philmont 2011

We have 2 crews of 12 members available for 2011.  The crews depart June 21st and return July 4th.  Cost is $1050 per person.  If your unit would like one of these crews email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Triple Crown Award

The Charles L. Sommers Alumni Association in conjunction with the Boy Scouts of America have authorized the issuance of a special certificate and patch to honor those Scouts and Scouters who have participated in at least one program at each of the three National High Adventure Bases operated by the Boy Scouts of America. These Bases are Philmont Scout Ranch (including the Double H Ranch), Northern Tier High Adventure Bases (Ely, Atikokan, and Bissett), and the Florida National High Adventure Sea Base.  1,051 were awarded The Triple Crown Award in 2009.  Consider visiting all 3 National High Adventure bases as part of your Units camping program.  High Adventure treks are a great way to keep older Scouts active in your unit.  Click here for more information.
